Fanfare and Fantasy was commissioned by the Coeur d'Alene Youth Symphony Orchestra for a performance premiere scheduled for May 21, 2007 at 7pm at the North Idaho College Boswell Auditorium.
The piece begins with melody A in 6 8 with a fanfare begun by the French horns echoed by trumpets repeated by trombones, and finally the strings and other instruments enter and bring this A melody to a climax.
Melody B enters and is a romantic theme played first by strings with a unique time signature of 6/8 over 3/4 time signature. The woodwinds repeat theme B with string accompaniment.
Melody C begins with a Clarinet solo playing a complex version of Melody C. Then the oboe begins a simpler variation of the C melody with the bassoon playing snare playing a variation. Meanwhile the snare drums play a mysterious middle eastern beat and the accompanying chords remain in g minor despite the melodic chord changes. The French horns add a new variation to the repeat of the clarinet and oboe melodies and the theme slows down and ends in major key. Theme D is introduced as a new fanfare melody and ends the piece.
